MISS BLACKTHORN

Miss Blackthorn

I started the Stud in 1974 when I moved to Blackthorn Farm in Berkshire. My first TB was an ex race mare called Delphi Rocket, who had a chestnut filly which I called Miss Blackthorn she went on to win a number of races in my colours.

Sir BlackthornShe in turn had a son called Sir Blackthorn (seen left) who went on to be a top show hack. I also bred Hunters & Coloureds using H.I.S stallions. All offspring went on to being useful ridden animals.

I first came across Connemara ponies when I was a child with just one thing on my mind - show jumping. Of course, at that time I was not interested in breeding or looks, to me the ponies were from Ireland and were renowned for their performance and ability.

Since then, one thing I have always considered and which has remained constant in my mind when breeding and producing horses and that is they have to perform. Over the years I have been involved with a number of breeds, for some years I bred Thoroughbreds, the most successful being Miss Blackthorn who won a number of races also her son Sir Blackthorn; they again followed my ideal and that is as performance animals.

Blackthorn Lad (Miss Blackthorn), shown below, was trained as a Novice Hurdler by Fred Winter and ridden by John Francombe in this photo at Newton Abbott.
